I remember I heard the novel titled the same back to elementary school without knowing what the novel was about. Well back then I didn’t read novels, all I read was piles of Doraemon and Sailor Moon (read both the black and white and colored edition, teeheehee).
Because the movie uses the novel as its sole source and I did not read the novel, I had no expectation towards the movie which I think it’s good because some people I know would compare +/- 2 hrs movie with a book consists of hundreds of pages. Well that is a lot of work to do for the scriptwriter.
This movie was rather interesting enough and I think I have never seen a movie like this. How can I put this.. How the producer created the set Moscow vs. outside Moscow using indoor set was very interesting yet a bit confusing at first.
And the costumes, well I have always loved movies that set back to 1700s to 1800s with big gowns and extraordinary hair pieces. The black hair pieces/hat worn by Keira Nightley when attending Dolly’s ball in St. Petersburg looked lovely to me. And her black gown was mesmerizing. While with Vronsky, his all-time-white suit matched his persona sparked from his blonde hair quite well.
The story line? I could not give my comments on the story line as I have not read the novel yet. But what I know for sure is that I pity Karenin and his big heart, I dislike Anna for betraying Karenin and for falling for the wrong guy (your problem was your husband shared his feeling and his attention in a rather less romantic way, that was all I think!), and I dislike Vronsky because he kept on teasing loveless Anna! hiks.. If only Anna had held her patience living with Karenin and his less romantic trait, she would not have to deal with some issues in this movie! (but that will make this movie, even the novel did not exist, hehehe). I did not really enjoy this movie just because it turned out to be not my type of movie. My type would be ones belong to Jane Austen’s, or movies about Jane herself (such as Becoming Jane). Quick fact about me: I CANNOT enjoy movies that show too much skin, if you know what I mean. It’s just, ugghh, please! I want to watch movies, enjoy the storyline, the music, the acts. Now, I can’t enjoy the movie at all!!!
What I learn from this movie is that passion and love are two different thing. If it is passion, it’s fake. Because passion is dangerous and it’s like a drug that spreads fast with no antidote. It gets you high and keeps you away from rationality. When your feet touch the ground, you will want a piece of that drug once more, but eventually you will run out of this drug. (Vronsky) While love is real. It’s like oxygen. You may cannot see it, but it’s there. And you will never run out of it. That’s love. (Karenin)
Maybe what’s best is passionate love. But hey people, you ask too much and forget of being grateful for what you’ve got!
